We’ve seen how sugar prompts the production of insulin, and that can then result in either sugar uptake by your muscles, or the energy being stored in your fat cells.
There is an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL) that helps activate the fat storage process, in the presence of insulin. Men have more LPL around their bellies, and women have more around their hips and bottom. This helps explain why men and women tend to put on weight in those areas.
Fortunately you’ve got LPL in your muscles too and by activating it (by exercising), all those calories will be taken up by muscle cells for energy instead of being stored as fat.
When you exercise the LPL helps the fat get sucked out of your bloodstream and get burned up as energy by your muscles.
The effect also lasts for a while after exercising, so you will continue to burn fat for a short while.
