In this topic we will set up my Fitness Pal on your smartphone.
MyFitnessPal is a free app for iPhone, Android and Windows phones. Visit your respective app store to find the app.
Installing and setting up MyFitnessPal
- Go to your app store and do a search for MyFitnessPal.
MyFitnessPal page in the Google Play Store
MyFitnessPal in the iTunes App Store
- Install the app on your phone or tablet (whichever device is with you most often)
- Create a profile for yourself.
Once you have installed the app, you will need to create an account with MyFitnessPal if it’s the first time you’ve ever used the service. This is a very quick process and just requires an email address and password.
- Follow the prompts to set your app up for the first time. You can change all of the settings later, so don’t worry about making a mistake.
The app will ask how much you currently weigh, and how much weight you would like to lose. It will also ask you the rate at which you wish to lose weight.
Initially for your first week, you may wish to choose a gradual rate of weight loss. This makes the first week slightly easier on you as if you start too aggressively the calorie restriction will be more intense and therefore more difficult to cope with the lack of food and any hunger pangs that you’ll experience. This will depend on your current level of carb addiction (there’s a quiz later to help you assess this!)
On the flip side, if you do start off aggressively, you will see faster results and this can be very motivating, so it’s really a personal choice. Some people will prefer the slow, gentle approach, whereas for some people it’s a case of “no pain, no gain”.
Choose whichever approach you think will suit you best. You can adjust it as you go along, if you need to.
Remember that this isn’t a race. It’s more important to make a sustainable change for your long term future. We’re not just trying to lose some weight rapidly and then put it all back on again!
OK, more about MFP later, but for now, let’s carry on installing the apps you need…
